Grounds Wrap Up

Well, despite 20″ of rain and 10″ of snow during September and October we still managed to get everything done that we set out to do. It was not a very good fall for golfing or for being productive on the course but we know how everything needs to average out so hopefully we have good weather ahead for 2012. This week the grounds staff is busy finishing up preparations for winter including spraying all of our fine turf areas to protect against snow mold fungi, dormant seeding greens, topdressing greens, deep tine aerating greens, roping off greens, continuing leaf clean-up, bringing in all the course supplies for the winter and covering a few greens to give them a little extra push this fall and into next spring. We had a great last week of the season for golfing and we all know how quickly the weather can turn on us in the Berkshires so we don’t wait until the last minute to get ourselves ready for the inevitable. By the end of this week we should be pretty well set to handle whatever winter brings our way!

From all the members of the golf operations staff, we want to thank the entire membership for their support and participation in all our activities. 2011 was a very challenging season for the golf industry and Taconic Golf Club with the economy and extreme weather trying to deter the game we all enjoy. I hope we did enough to service your needs in spite of these distractions and I can assure you that if we fell a bit short in some areas, it wasn’t for a lack of concern or effort.

Even though the 2011 golf season is behind now, we are already making plans for 2012 and looking forward to those opportunities. Cathy & I want to wish all of you a happy holiday season and a safe winter. Our plans to head south will include a stop in Philadelphia to see our children (Joey & Becky) before continuing to Florida for some R&R. Please feel free to contact us with any of your concerns for 2012, so we can address them. Our days in the off season are filled with numerous club preparations, seminars, the PGA Golf Show, Williams College golf team concerns (schedule & springbreak), college alumni functions and the occasional round of golf. If I can promise you one thing for 2012, it is both of us will be ready to play more golf @ Taconic during the season.

A three hour frost delay hampered the start of this year’s event which necessitated a mini shotgun start of players around 10 o’clock. As a result, a few teams struggled with darkness issues because of the Daylight Savings Time limitation of daylight in November.

Regardless, a large turnout of teams enjoyed the “superintendent’s revenge” under the two-person scramble format of the event. Click on this link to see the results: 2011 Bulldozer Open results
